What is a road traffic accident?

A road traffic accident is an accident betweeen two or more vehicles, a vehicle and a cyclist, a vehicle and a pedestrian, a vehicle and a fixed object such as a bridge, building, tree, post, etc, or a single vehicle that overturned on or near a public road.


What is meant by severity of an accident ?

Severity of an accident is defined as the degree of injury sustained by road users involved in an accident such as (a) fatal accident, (b) serious injury accident, (c) slight injury accident, and non injury accident.


What is a fatal road accident?

Fatal accident is an accident resulting in the death of one or more persons.Prior to 2002, a fatal accident was defined as an accident where deaths occurred within 7 days. As from 2002, a fatal accident is defined as an accident where deaths occurred within 30 days.


What is a serious road accident?

A serious road accident is one in which one or more persons are seriously injured.


What is a slight road accident?

A slight accident is one in which one or more persons are slightly injured.


What is a non injury road accident?

A non injury accident is an accident in which no one is killed or injured but which results in damage to the vehicle/s and/or other property only.


What is casualty ?

Any person killed or injured in a road accident is referred to as casualty.


What is fatality ?

Fatality is referred to as any person killed or injured in a road accident within 30 days.


What is fatality index ?

Fatality index is the number of fatalities per 100 casualties.The fatality index for the year 2006 is 5.3.


What is the fatality rate per 100,000 population for the year 2006 ?

The fatality rate per 100,000 population for the year 2006 is 11.0.


What is the fatality rate per 1000 vehicle for the year 2006 ?

The fatality rate per 1,000 vehicle for the year 2006 is 0.4


What is serious injury ?

Serious injury accident is an accident for which a person is detained in hospital as an "in-patient" or any of the following injuries: fractures,concussions, internal injuries, severe cuts and lacerations, crushings and severe general shock requiring medical treatment.


What is slight injury ?

Slight injury accident is an injury of minor character such a sprain, bruise and cut not judged to be severe.


How is a road accident recorded ?

All data concerning road accident is recorded by the police on a form known as Police Form 178 (P.F 178).This new form was developed by Traffic Research Laboratory (T.R.L) of the U.K .It has been developed to suit the Mauritian context . It can record about 100 details on every injury accident reported to the police.The accident data and management system is being supported by a software known as the Maap(Micro Computer Accident Analysis Package) software for windows V.4.0.


What is the MAAP software ?

This software was also developed by the Transport Research Laboratory of the United Kingdom and is being widely used in many developing countries as for example India, Fiji etc. This software provides the possibility of plotting accidents on a map using the Geographical information System(G.I.S).


How the MAAP software enable us to locate black spot areas ?

MAAP software allows us to identify the clustering of fatal accidents along different roads for the past years .

A list of black spot areas in Mauritius are as follows: (1) Centre de Flacq (New Traffic Centre) (2)Black River Road ( From P-Riviere to B-River) (3)Motor way M1 (from Soreze to Bagatelle)and from junction M-Ory to Reduit). (4) Motorway M2 (from R-Bois to T-Rouge) (5) P-Louis - Mahebourg Road ( from N-france to R-Belle) (6)Savanne Road ( from St-Aubin to Riv des Anguiles) (7)Vacoas Road ( from La Louise to Solferino) (8) Triolet road ( from Solitude to Trou-aux-Biches) (9) Coromandel A1 Road (from Sunray to Tulsi- Sham). Which road is considered to be the most dangerous one ?

Motorway (M1) is considered to have the highest road accident death toll of all roads in the island and the locations of these accidents are spread over the whole stretch of the motorway.As from last year the authority has taken drastic measures to mitigate severe accidents along the motorway.

The average number of person killed over the past 10 years is 149 and number of seriously injured is 268 annually.
